扇子在中國至少有三千多年的歷史記載,，最早可以追溯至三皇五帝的上古時期。

根據唐代的《獨異志》記載，女媧「結草為扇，以障其面」，與伏羲結為夫婦，成為人類的始祖，制定了婚嫁習俗。虞帝舜製作了意為廣達聖明的五明扇，代表東、西、南、北、中五個方向。根據晉代崔豹《古今注·輿服》記載：「既受堯禪，廣開視聽，求賢人以自輔，故作五明扇焉。」我們會在古畫中，看見中國古代的宮人手持象徵天子威儀的巨大的羽扇，就沿襲了舜帝五明扇相同的內涵。

正因為扇子有這樣高貴的出身，所以在天子諸侯，貴族士子的生活中，成為不可或缺的時尚。唐朝畫家閻立本有工筆《歷代帝王圖》，其中吳主孫權手持的麈（zhǔ）尾扇，也非常特別。說文解字中，塵（chén）是鹿奔跑時塵土飛揚的樣子，麈（zhǔ）則是領隊大鹿，手執麈尾有「領袖群倫」之意。後又有從麈尾扇演化而成的比翼扇，將頂端的鹿尾毛改成鳥羽，是帝子天神、仙真玉女臨凡的象徵。

讓羽扇的智謀意象流傳後世的，是三國時期的周瑜和諸葛亮。據古籍《語林》的記載，諸葛亮「白羽扇，指揮三軍，三軍皆隨其進止」。白羽扇是臥龍先生孔明指揮戰爭的工具，羽扇輕搖，便有妙計無數，退敵於千里之外。另有蘇軾的《念奴嬌·赤壁懷古》，稱儒將周瑜「羽扇綸巾，談笑間，強虜灰飛煙滅」。就這樣，羽扇成了後世人們心目中謀士登場的必備道具。

神韻的女子舞蹈中，常見深院閨秀們手持圓扇，那也是中國古扇中的經典扇形。因形似圓月，有相思團圓之意，又稱團扇；因常在宮中使用，又稱宮扇。漢代班婕妤的《怨歌行》中，有「裁為合歡扇，團團似明月」的詩句，南朝劉孝威的《七夕穿針》也有「故穿雙眼針，時縫合歡扇」的說法，指的都是這種圓扇。她還有一個名字叫紈扇，宋代女詞人李清照的《多麗·咏白菊》中，就曾有「紈扇提詩」的詞句。古代有「齊紈楚竹」的說法，就是指用山東的絹和湖南的竹子製作的紈扇，是最上乘的。

神韻的男子舞蹈中的折扇，是當今最常見的類型，無論是大清侍衛的鐵扇風姿，還是蘭亭舒序中儒生的以扇代筆，都是給人留下深刻印象的經典舞蹈。折扇流行於明清時期，是文人墨客、風雅之士的必備。持扇時，扇面向人，扇背向己，有客尊主卑的自謙之意。

Such is the enchanting beauty of the Chinese fan. Whether in the folding style or the circular rigid style, the fan has been an accessory deeply intertwined with Chinese history and culture. Its meaning goes far beyond providing cooling relief in the hot summer weather (though it certainly has done a lot of that throughout Chinese history). Regardless of the season, the fan has come to be associated with the royal court of the Emperor and the lovely court ladies who wielded them. Over the dynasties, fans also gained a profound artistic history, serving as an integral prop for elaborate court dances. They also served as canvases for genteel scholars to inscribe poems and paintings.

The imperial mystique of the fan can be seen in the words of Tang Dynasty poet, Du Fu, who wrote the following in one 8^th century poem that describes a morning scene in the capital:

Amid the mist, the pheasant tails awaken,
Fans within the Royal Palace open,
Beaming sun surrounds the dragon scales,
The Emperor’s face, the morning light unveils.

The fan played such a large role in ancient Chinese culture that it was even used as a weapon! Chinese and Japanese cultures both developed “war fans” for use in warfare. Today, Shen Yun also makes use of the rich culture of the Chinese fan. Both male and female dances—portraying scholars and court ladies, respectively—are often performed by Shen Yun.
